MARGINA is an intimate insight into the life of the family of Menan, that lives at the edge of European society in Macedonia. This documentary presents a poignant connection between an individual story and the global structures of injustice, exploitation and racism, forcing many people to flee their homes. Without overt pathos, the film shows everyday family-life, marked by social marginalization, racist discrimination and economic hardship. Like many Roma of the region, the family is forced to make a living by cutting firewood for their non-Roma neighborhood. Many scenes are not easy to endure due to the structural, and often unconscious, verbal violence. In search for a better life, the family decides to try to make their way to Germany, in order to seek asylum and spend the winter there.
